Part One
Part Two
During the nesting season owls eat ferociously (even the babies) so that would mean that the parent owls would have to hunt for a great deal of mice if that were their primary food source. If there were three babies that each ate 5 mice per night and you also threw in the fact that both parents ate 4 mice a piece per night, how many mice would these buy parents have to catch in 30 days?
A: 5 mice times 3 babies =15 + (4 mice times 2 parents) 8 = 23 mice per night for 30 days equals a staggering 690 mice per month for this growing little family that we know to be (Question #2) Barn Owls.
The pyramid above shows that owls eventually ingest every other living organism in the food chain from direct ingestion to tertiary ingestion stemming from the animals they eat. This is exactly what happens with humans and other apex predators as well. Chemicals and poisons like mercury or DDT are so very dangerous to apex predators because said predator may not know that they are even ingesting such poisons because they ingest the poisons when they eat their natural prey and it leeches into that predators system.
